P. DeBenedictis 1965 Colidius alpina 13 July Barrow, Alaska - The adults seemed to be out of each other and no clutches were seen although birds seldom came into close contact. The chicks froze at my approach and were difficult to see. They would not move even when disturbed with my foot. Nest 9 contained 3 eggs. 14 July Nests 10 and that near USC+55 with eggs. A group of 5 found in the ponds W of line 2+3 and 2 seen in Central Beach. Still hear a little parachuting as the coming molt of individuals is less evident due to feather growth. There are several pairs obviously nesting on gasoline Ridge S of hills BTT, but we were unable to find any nests. 15 July The bride on nest 3 sitting. Not many seen during the day but a piece of egg shell was found near line 5T on Pitelka's census plot in the evening. 16 July One of the nests found 10 July smashed by the silver not checked. Saltated birds seen along Elson bayou but not elsewhere. From the egg contents this nest above was not a very old one, and Nest 3 eggs found. The nest appeared to have been stepped upon. 17 July Adults in the area where found 13 July and two young were seen. The chicks are much stronger now and when approached they get up and run; they can move! The adults seem as inclined to brood as earlier and the chicks look larger but not much plumage change. 19 July Nest 3 hatched, 3 young ready to leave the nest and 1 adult in the area.
