Calidris alpina
P. DeBenedictis
1965
8 July Barrow, Alaska - Dunlin were more visually conspicuous
today than any other date previously, and I saw 4 birds
together for the first time in days. They got along
fairly well although one went into a wing up &
chased a 2nd bird a 2 ft. for two occasions, never for
enough to break up the group. Two scattered pairs
and 2-3 lone birds were seen and one was found
associated with a small group of Rarituals, and another
with a flock of Semipals. When the bird was flushed
from Nest 4, it chased the passerine of nest 20 when
the latter approached the dunlin's nest. No frog note
songs but a fair amount of aerial tills considering
the sound.
9 July McLean found a 3 egg nest W of VOTH slough in the
afternoon. It was in moderately tall grass and fairly well
covered. The brooding bird gave a good distraction display.
Heard one complete song in VOTH area in the evening.
10 July A nest with Beggs was found S of [illegible] along the
gasoline in the morning and 3, 4 egg nests were found
along Elton hugoon in the evening. They are calling
more than any of its other shorebirds, the passerine
trill heard frequently, but no frog note heard.
11 July This was the utmost the only Calidris seen except [illegible]
in the 1 Karovik region. It was a common here as
anyplace and appeared to be nesting; best nests
could be located; several obviously setting birds were seen
and 3-6 parachuting tills were heard; no evidence
of flocking noted.
