P. De Breda 1965 Calidris alpina 2 July Barrow, Alaska - Still 3 eggs in Nest 3 but no birds around. Hamilton said the eggs were warm this evening. 4 July Except for a Burst of Semipalmated Song this was the most Calidris today everywhere. Heard at least 5 songs involving the pognote and many trills; the birds are quite inconspicuous and all seen are in primary molt. 5 July found a nest with 4 eggs between hives IIIA-B and saw one other nest towards hive IV; the birds are still slightly vocal, aerial display but are very inconspicuous, flying close to the ground and apparently only with difficulty. They go some distance from the nest when disturbed. Saw 28's together plus a few singles, probably ½ pair. All are molting 6 July For the 1st time under good conditions heard no songs with the pog note although I did not hear trills given by birds as they flew low and landed, often in a V-glide posture. This was the commonest Calidris seen everywhere except Central Marsh today, but most were very concealed about my presence & saw 2 in distraction displays along Elson Lagoon. None seen in Central Marsh. 7 July Two pursuit back in Micronet and one on west 3 sat so tight I was able to touch it. Still 3 eggs. Nests 2,4 and 5 all contained 4 eggs and were attended by at least one bird. Heard a little song in the North House during the afternoon, though most noise was the trill. rather than the pog note.
