P.D. Benedict 1965 Calidris alpinae 20 June. Barrow, Alaska - off later. One or two attempted displays seen. No non-territorial birds seen. In the attempted copulation the one bird chased the other (see ?) with a fluffed out posture, the wing folded but held away from the body. 21 June. Dunlin had almost entirely disappeared from the area between H+S. Salt hogans, the only birds seen being, displaying 3's near Britton's area. 22 June. Dunlin are more in evidence towards the 50th area there, towards the ocean and were not very active although (1 or 2 displays seen (no ground display)) They seem to have moved into better areas, which were not available earlier in the season, for feeding. There were many pairs along Elson's hogan and a fair amount of aerial display was seen as well as a series of wing outs followed by a ? pursuit close. 23 June. Saw one bird get up and chase a 3 Lapland Longspur which flew over, but did not make contact it turned away before the longspur landed. Saw three together at one Twin and heard 2-4 flight songs but saw no ground display other than a trill given in an alert posture. 24 June. Only 1 pair noted for sure and little display seen in the above area. The species was more numerous in the Elson hogan trees but no sign of nesting was obtained. They are either found alone or in pairs and a fair degree of aerial song was observed considering
