P. DeBenedictis 1965 Calidris alpina 10 June Barrow, Alaska - (2) birds were found near a gravel area in the ARL area; I first flushed one bird, which flew in from the west, then after loosing track of it, flushed a bird from a graveled area; it flew out into the gully area a short distance but didn't remain in this area. Latter 2 birds were seen on a ridge in the Central Marsh and 6 (5 together +1) were seen on patches of exposed tundra in CRREL bird area. They were rather quiet and feeding quite a bit. 11 June. Saw only 4-6 birds out near the SE end of Family hogoon, and one feeding observation 001-11Jn-4P-1p-3C-0-0-j? (4/3sec) - 45+20 sec. The bird was feeding mostly in grass cut by lemming and I saw it take at least 12 food items. In the evening heard the song, a more musical version of the fall and longer, and a second singer pitched descending tull. Birds very scattered. 12 June Saw only 2 birds along the beach ridge in the afternoon but 4 in the morning when cleaning hennings. There were quite a few out in the 50TH area and along the W side Family hogoon, including 4 to 5 groups of 4-6 and one group 2?. There was considerable flight display and many pairs but little evidence of courtship activity. Birds tended to feed in grassy, upland areas and remain in one spot more than any other species of Calidris.
