Colidei's melanostes 28 May Meade River Coal Mine, 15°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska 3 B's were seen sleeping in high polygonal area grown to Caneys-Saley 3-5" high and 1/2 snow covered on the dunes 2 Mi N of camp along the Meade R. When I approached them all 3 got up and flew X, calling the rough "Snipe" call. 29 May Two sem resting in spaced, grassy low Polygon areas in camp and a flock of at least 20 birds seen flying S along the Meade River about 1:30 PM. No noise, and no feeding activity seen. 30 May One B with two golden plovers in high polygon areas about 4 Km. from camp along the Meade. Not feeding. Thought I heard a song note. 31 May A B sem flying through camp about noon. 1 June A B sem feeding in a low polygon near camp and tattler flushed from similar habitat. No vocalizations heard. 2 June A big increase in #s now- One B feeding in low polygonal area in camp and 3-4 sem in flight near the creek; some song in the groups of males now, and much more alarming. One or two dunes feeder in open sand wet work birds feeding on the tops of the low polygon ridges where there is much moss. They feed with rapid shallow subsurface bill motions. Some song here, but little evidence that B's are established, and meet.
