P.D Benedict, 1965 Calidris melanotos 6 July Barrow, Alaska - at least 3-5% to every snow. 7 July Saw 283 together in the NW part of Miconut and about 25 birds in two groups in the main part of the marsh, only one of which was a & and a group of 5 (2Bs) out in the polygonized area East of AACs. Heard no hooting. The next still with 4 eggs and the & was attributed by a juvenile. Birds tended to fly up and circle the area when disturbed and were very social. Birds seen in the VOTH area were solitary and widely spaced but no display was seen or heard. 8 July Two groups were found near the VOTH area, one of 283 and 344 and the other of 25 + 5 to 6 &. The former group showed some interaction between 3& + &'s, the 3 approaching the & who jump up and flew about 3 feet away as the & moved rear. Both groups scattered on the ground but were quite compact when all were flushed. 9 July No display; there were 2 small (4-6 birds) groups in the VOTH area and a few slightly larger groups in the area from trees to Footprint Lake. There were a couple of large groups (80-20? birds) live and in VOTH slough, as well as singles and small groups. The flocks seemed to be of females primarily but several aggregations of &'s were seen. When flushed they would get up and circle around and land again, in nearly the same area as they took off.
