P. De Benedicti's 1965 Calidris melanotos 5 July Barrow, Alaska - There were none in SOTH trough today. They were scattered and not very social in Central Marsh, and very quiet, even when flushed. They were rather evenly distributed over the marsh as usual. One group of 5 was chased by jåe gers. Heard One "hooking" in the evening near lines III A-B and saw a ? get up, chase a ?; the chase was joined by a second ? and eventually another ? was added. Later saw a ? repeatedly approaching a ? on the ground; this ? would walk little and quipay and fly in an arc about 3 ft. radius away from the ? as it approached. The ? gave only a low, rough tosqui, call, "man", and, once after this ? flew some distance it flew after due and landed in a tail up posture: [illegible] and walked towards the ?, who flew off; its ? gave up after this and began to feed. 6 July They have much declined in numbers from even earlier this month. Saw only 3? and a? in Holmes' Marsh and the rest in Central Marsh. Those in the marsh were prone to get up and form flocks of 6-8 birds, often picking up a few phalaropes or smaller "peep" and circle the marsh, often rising to 40-50 feet, and thus landing again, but on the ground groups were not much in evidence. They are now more prevalent in wetter parts of the marsh than elsewhere and this are.
