Colidris melanotos
30 June Barrow, Alaska - so that this gregariousness was not
very evident. The species was rather generally distributed
through Central Marsh but was somewhat more numerous
in shallower areas toward the center of the marsh where
grass was fairly high. All fed by jabbing or probing.
One F with creamy-white outer primaries was seen and
was very striking in flight. There was a small group
in Wisconet Marsh and scattered Fs were seen along the
ridge and in the polygonal area N of the ridge.
2 July Birds are still abundant, relatively speaking, in Central
Marsh, being widely scattered in the marsh and a few
small (B-B birds) groups seen flying near the ridge.
Heard a clear rolling note from a F given as she fed
and walked towards a 2nd pectoral; this note was unfamiliar.
There was very little display flight, no "hoo-it"ing and
little aggression shown by birds seen today.
3 July Dr. Pitelka found a nest with 5 eggs in the
VOTH area but he couldn't get the F.
4 July Heard one bout of "hoo-iting" over the VOTH area and
another near the Meadow Lakes. There are no longer
any small flocks but the scattered birds, which
were especially numerous in VOTH Slough, Footprint Lake
and Central Marsh, often from groups of 2-4 where
one flies about. 2 were seen flying with Western Sandpiper,
q.v. The snipe-like call was given as after a "terreh"
flight call.
