P. DeBenedictis 1965 Calidris melanotos 19 June. Breeze, Horby - made a circle about 60-80 feet around and landed and began to feed. Later flushed a 2nd ? feeding with 2 dunlin; the 1st male (above) flown in giving a series of "hoo-it" calls, the heart deeply inflating, and landed near the 2nd ? which gave a harsh, short squeak [illegible] rather like the note of a snipe when flushed, but longer. The two then fed peacefully within 2-4 feet of each other for 2-3 minutes until I chased them away. All seen were ?s and feeding in rather wet areas. 20 June Saw one aerial display given by a ? chasing another bird of uncertain sex for about 100 yards, only the "hoo-it" call part noted. Saw one definite ? and one very reddish bird which I saw very poorly. 21 June Saw two aerial displays both apparently involving multiple ?s (2a3), in each case two birds flew, far off, the "hooting" male in pursuit: The male being chased occasionally gave a snipe-like call and the flight was very rapid. Somewhat less in evidence today as compared to yesterday. 22 June Saw one bird, which gave a series of "hoo-it" with both area and 1a2 along Elton lespoon, which was silent. 23 June At least 3 birds were in the area, by microset. Two were seen displaying on the ground on a row bank close to each other, and then took off together, giving the "hoo-it" call. About 3 minutes later [illegible]
