Calidris melanotos
10 June Barrow, Alaska - a single bird was seen in in
area near the Cell hut on a exposed, grassy ava
a fundia, when it fed more or less actively & silently.
13 June Saw a group of 7 and 4 singletons along the
W side of Family Lagoon in high polygonated
area. The feed by rapid ? probing motions and
worked rather grassy areas. No display.
14 June only a few, singly 8's seen. No display.
16 June 4 males seen by Elson Lagoon in the afternoon
but no display.
17 June Saw a definite & today, hardly larger than
a dunlin. There were also about 10 males in
the area but no display. They feed heavily in
the flood trenches between polygon and in
flooded areas on level ground, particularly
where there are over heavy cuttings. They
normally put the entire bill (not its head)
into the water and feed in bursts of rapid move-

cuttings. The flight note is variable but usually
softer than that given by a dunlin and not as soft
as a Baird's. Yellowish legs are quite conspicuous.
19 June Saw a little aerial display today. A male was
seen 1st giving 8 deep, resonant "loo-it" calls in a deep
flapping flight then went into a series of alternating
rapid less deep flaps and V-glides, each segment
flight activities lasting 1/2 to 1 second, and the bird
