R. DeBenedictis, 1965 Calidris canadensis 12 July Barrow, Alaska - all nests behind the bar checked and the only change being that Nest 4 has disappeared, not surprising considering the behavior of the 4. No pairs seen at any nest. 14 July The bird still sitting on nest 3. 15 July Nests 6+5 empty. A piece of egg shell was found near nest 6; it appeared to have been broken from the outside. 10 birds seen in distance. 20 July Nest 3 empty and no Bairds found in the area, though little search was made. 23 July Nest 7 hatching today, 2 chicks and 1 egg in the nest. The (?) was present and displayed vigorously in the manner of a Semipalmated Plover. To my and a pair of Pomarine Jaegers' presence, the calls differing only in that distinctive "chi-tsik" alarm call was frequently given. It flew quite near the jaegers when they approached the nest. The chicks are quite like semipalmateds in color and freeze very tight. 4 birds staging close together were seen feeding on the weasel road near USC+G 5in Central Marsh. They preferred to feed in the bare weasel tracks but occasionally went into the open, low grass along the road and would make 3-5 pecking motions, then probe deeply in a short burst in an area, moving about between feeding motions. One appeared more scaled on the back than most that I have seen date so far.
