P.D. Benedict's
1965
Calidris canadensis
2 July. Barrow, Alaska. One ♀ (West 4) sat very tight
and almost jumped into my hand when she got off, and
gave the open winged distraction display only 2 feet
from my feet; I might have caught her if I'd wanted.
Got a distraction display from a ♂ which appeared
to be well away from a nest and as usual the only
feeding birds seen were well up on the low polygons.
4 July. I checked Nests 3 and 5 today, both having eggs
and attended only by a ♂ which sat very tight and
gave good distraction display; they quiver the wings
in the display. See 2 possibilities for this locale.
6 July. A nest with 3 eggs was found on a rather barren
raised polygon ~½ way from Hickamet to the Bow site
on the Weasel track to DSC+GS shack. A ♂ got off
the nest and yelled loudly at our approach but
was not joined by a 2nd bird nor were any other
seen nearby.
7 July. All the nests behind the lab were checked in the morning
and at all only one bird could be located; however at
nest 6 a bird which I though was a ♂ landed giving
a trial in a V-gliding position and I heard what
I took to be canadensis song somewhere around nests 4 and 5.
The ♂ on 6 sat very tight, almost allowing me to touch her
and allowed approach to 2 feet. A pair was seen
in the polygonized area E of AACS. One song and
a single bird (not the same) seen in the VOTH area.
10 July. The pair Soy Fresh lake hill have 3 eggs, and only one bird
was seen at the nest.
