P. de Benedict's 1965 Calidris fuscicollis 25 June Barrow, Alaska - All the birds seen today were fairly close to the ocean. The pair seen in the morning were in a prolonged sexual chase and the birds seen in the afternoon were near the Need M. Salt Lagoon and giving the aerial display most persistently. 26 June A pair in close association was seen on Dr. Pitelka's plot and although they appeared nervous about my presence no nest could be located. At one hour in the late evening 4?Bs were seen in aerial display over the Barrow area and no sign of nesting other than sexual chores has been seen. 27 June Saw four or five displaying birds on the Barrow area but little ground display. Birds not very active. NEST 1 found a nest with 2 eggs on a ridge in a trash pile, incubated by the ? When we jumped him once he flew to the ? and went into a crouch, his wings slightly open and tail up, giving a wing up right after he landed, and called "weeeeeaaah tomnn" the last will becoming softer at the end. The ? circled but nothing else happened, the 2 birds separating. The birds gave rather clear "chivvrrr" call reminiscent of a call of a Semipalmated Plover when approached. They acted like Semipals when approaching the nest and sat when we were about 40 feet away. The sitting bird went into a strong distraction display when we approached the nest.
