P.D.Benedict's 1965 Calidris bairdi 20 June Barrow, Alaska - two silent birds seen in a low wet area near the FAA tower, where none noted yesterday. 21 June Birds were quietly displaying behind the animal hut about 1130, the display all being aerial territorial display. Two silent birds seen in a low flooded area in the afternoon by the FAA tower. 22 June One pair found near the Voth area and another [illegible] high polygons on the E side of Voth Slough. The only display seen was a single wing up given by the P of the 1st pair. They seem to probe more than semipales. I were seen close together in aerial flight about 60 PM over the ARH area. 23 June Birds observed feeding fed by probing 1/2 the bill into rather bare soil, showing a preference to to low hummocks of moss found in low polygons. Other than one wing up and a flight "song" no display was seen. One feeding on the ground was scared up when a running car directly under it. 24 June Saw more today than yesterday in the same area; Aerial display given frequently, and saw 1-2 wing ups and a little wing out. One bird on the ground gave a repeated long trill followed by birds of the "krrrpt" "frog-note" as in the aerial display. It took a tail stance [illegible] when calling and raised the tail, especially, especially when giving the "frog-note" and sometimes seemed to half open one wing briefly. The ground trill sounds very like "pacificus".
