Calidris fasciculata
23 June Barrow, Alaska - they went into an upright posture
with one wing up and then an alut posture
[sketch of three birds in flight, showing progression from wings spread to upright]
all this fairly close to the 9. The streaking along
the flanks accentuates the white wing lining in a wing
up.
"The male" flew with a rapid, fairly deep
wing beat, 2-3 feet off the ground, rose suddenly
to about 20 feet, hovered 2±1 second and came
down slowly its wings in a V glide position
and landing slowly, twisting somewhat
as it landed, calling a "po-oit"
8±2 Twin beginning with the hovering and continuing
through the descent; it was alone and fed after it
landed. The male was heard to call of 3-4 other
occasions and another version of the call is:
"2222t p-wee zit p-wee zit p-wee-zit", over the male
bent one wing out at the end of this series.
A different pair was seen, one chasing the other,
with a direct wing beat, then going into a short
V-glide, calling "p-wee 222t p-wee 222t p-wee zit",
flapping a short twin, gliding and calling again and
flapping, now getting too far away to see well. The
birds were 4-6 feet up and the glide periods were longer than the call.
