Calidris maritima
29 May Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
Found lone bird feeding in high polygon sand
ridge 1/2 mi SE of camp along the Meade.
The bird was with longspurs when 1st found and
when I shot at and missed it, it flew 105 yards
and landed in similar habitat where it fed
Semipal-like as before, until I shot it. It
was silent at all times and allowed close approach.
The area it was feeding in was heavily matted
with low Cassiope about 1 to 2" high, and the
bird seemed to favor these spots for feeding. Ground
went but finger below the surface greatly such as so,
2 June A probable 4 seen feeding on a mud scrape
(where a sled has been dragged) at the mouth
of the village creek, feeding dimly like in the
mud. It flew off S along the river when approached.
4 June A strange song caught my attention and I fairly
traced it to an individual of this species. At least
two in the area and possibly two singing birds.
The song flight was typical, the bird rising rapidly,
10-40-50 m. and making a long circuit (with
flat or slightly depressed set wings) gliding alternating with a
rapid shallow wingbeats. The bird tended to return
to one spot and preferred two areas. It covers
an area about 40 meters square and once
chased a 2nd bird. Songs on the ground. No grand
display. Song, a high range. [illegible] occasionally
the 1st notes barely audible. It feeds [illegible] in polygon [illegible]
