Calidris maritima
25 June Barrow, Alaska - location similar to the above
bird. It feed near a pair of Semipols and was not
bothered by them. No vocalizations other than the
"kreet" fight note heard.
30 June A small flock is present in Central Marsh, most
in fairly dull plumage although clearly breeding plumage.
They are social but not tightly flocced; heard only the
"kreet" fight note, but saw one go after another on the
ground in a hindered posture, the 2nd bird moving
off.
[illegible]
This posture resembled that of the distraction display
except that the head was directed forward and the
bird moved towards a 2nd bird in an aggressive manner.
2 July There are still about 8-12 birds out in Central Marsh
including some in pretty miserable plumage. Saw two out
on a path of gack towards the center of the marsh in addition
to those seen along the edge, where they were more conspicuous
than semipols. Saw a flight song, given with appalling
motion, the bird rising up then falling down (flapping
the entire time and caching a low volume, high pitch
"zeeeee zeeeeeh", the whole thing happening so fast that
I wasn't able to co-ordinate the two. Saw one flying over,
P. Kelka's plot feed more anywhere else. The sound is very
white-sempol but the flight is rather more like a pectoral.
