P. De Benedicts 1965 Calidris maria 22 June Barrow, Alaska - a single bird was seen in with a group of Dunlin & Semipalmated Sandpipers in the VOTH area. It was feeding dunlin-like along the edge of a throng in wet soil, inserting about 1/2 the bill into the soil. It was noticeably reddish on the crown, "wash" and auriculars, strongly streaked on the back and was rather short-billed. It much more resembled a White-rump than a Semipalmated, and differs primarily in its streakiness of the back color and its all black bill; the breast was not as strongly marked and the flanks were spotted instead of streaked. The dark rump and "kreet" call note were noted when it flew. 23 June 1 and probably 2 birds were seen on Zocarino in the Brooks area near Nisconnet. They were short-billed, prob. 88's, since the 1st bird seen had more red on the scapulars than the others; all were grille red capped. They feed in rather wet areas and usually stuck 1/2 or so of the bill in to the ground in breasts of rapid mudflats, about 5 seconds. All were silent. 25 June One seen feeding in shallowly flooded saturated area along the edge of tangle in a highly polygonized area inserting the terminal half of the bill into the soil; judging from bill length it was a 4, and was red capped but not very red on the breast except the scapulars; they are grayer on the breast than Semipalmated. The bird in the VOTH area is still present and was seen feeding in a manner + in
