Calideis p. s. thr 5 July Meadele River Cool Mine, 157°25' W, 70°29' N, Alaska down on the Ox bow of the Meade. 6 July The nest by the far end of Phil's house is empty, probably hatched though no birds in the area. The seminapal all of the cearan plot were seen on the west part of the plot and once at 3 rows along the river. There was much activity by the plaver nest, birds flying about excitedly and 4-6 in the area. One nest had just hatched, all 4 yours there and one still wet. The other nest was empty. About 80 m. away found the G andall 4 chicks, and was able to watch brooding. When I went towards the chicks the parents gave one of the most frantic distraction displays I have seen, and the chicks responded all by creeping fwdly. When a bird went to brood, as close as 4 feet from me, it would go to one chick and rear back, ceeiling "pr pr prprp", a robing call similar to the alane. The chicks came right up to the parent. Both birds were in the area, and were attempting to brood the chicks. All the birds were in a wet Eiophanus flabarea, and the parents occasionally fed a little while they were off the chicks. The nest by the 5.5 weeks still with eggs. When the alane is spread about the chicks, all birds within hearing range, including dunlin, come in.
