Calidris pusilla -4 7 June Mclell River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska. Birds are widespread but commonest on the high area near camp and the village (feet esp) and along the shore of Ikmakak Lake. In the Camp marsh areas, they feed at water edge, along the snow packs, running actively and pecking at food items. Birds were several Twin seen hovering over the edge of pools. In the flat area they are out on the exposed areas and feed in microtopographic depressions. Ground display vigorous and most appear to be paired.. 8 June 2 or 3 f's near the camp pit, where they are feeding along the edge of carp pools pecking at the surface. Only dimlin seen in these areas, usually higher up the pool margins. I finally saw it - semipals out on the snow! In the evening, there were 4 on the Snow S of the village, 9 to 9 E of the village and 4-6 N of the village. The snow is covered with spring pebb and they and the Longspurs are really going to it. The Semipals dark about pecking at the snow, probably getting one spring tail/peck. No other sandpipers seen doing this. On the flats they are mostly in micro depressions and along water. Very actively displaying and some long song flights seem. 9 June Feeding in weasel-cat exerts in the village; and on the dunes, where I don't see what they are getting, as they are pecking at bare sand. Some on the snow. Lots of song. More and like they are resting yet. 2-3 partly on the camp plot. Much song.
