Calidris pusillus 30 May Meade River Coal Mine, 159°25'W, 70°39'N, Alaska One saw feeding with a golden plover on the Sandy flats 1 mi. N of camp and a 2nd bird later came by, the two flying off together. 3 saw flying south along the Meadele and 1 or 2 heard singing near the village about noon. Not a conspicuous species. Two "peep" seen in flight gave a loud plover-like call I have never heard before, but were probably this species. 6 flushed from a wetter bare sandy polygon along the River about 10:45 PM. They flew off. 31 May At least 4 near the creek and heard a little song. One or two came over the camp area and one over the "camps" plot area in the afternoon. Don't see them on the ground after. 1 June Only one seen on the ground, feeding on a (more) moist-grassy swale near a Golden Plover. 3 or 4 others heard. One song. 2 June Still have trouble finding them on the ground. Two or 3 near the village, and a little song, but not much evidence of the birds. Seen in flight and occasionally flushed in the polygonal area north of the creek. Birds seen on the ground are usually over damp like as in the same type stuff. One near the CO2 Warmigan and one on the camps plot in the evening. Usually seen in flight. I have no idea what they do on the ground - wherever they land.
