Calidris pugnax
15 July Barrow, Alaska. Nests 6,16, 5, 14, 15 and, according to Hamilton, 1 were empty with no birds about this morning. Nest 3 q 12, and 13 were as usual, attended by a lone (?) & , this curtain from the long bid of the bird at 3, and a & was seen at Nest 11. A 3 egg nest attended by a & was found west of Nest 15 and a 4 egg nest at the S end of the parcels in the haul area, attended by a lone bird. Two old birds were seen, one east of Nest 22 where the gasoline goes off to the pool site and one between Nests 6 and 23, which did not give the appearance of being tied down (the other gave a distraction display then landed on the gasolin). No traces of any other birds found despite careful search. See C. baudii.
16 July Bird sh//on nest 22.
17 July Went to the VOTK area and checked a few nests and found a new 4-egg nest which appeared to be attended by a &. Nests 7,8 and 18 were empty, Nest 19 with 3 eggs and the & present. A pair of semipals was found about 75 feet E of Nest 7, with 2 chicks and one was heard near Nest 18 but couldn't be found. a & with 2 chicks was found about ½ mile W of Pest 7 across the weasel road and clearly represents a nest not found earlier (2 semipals were seen in the area before the chicks were found). The latter bird may have had more young as it flew from one area where 2 chicks were seen to an area where I thought I heard young operating. It was wary and was not seen to brood the young.
