Calidris pusilla
25 June Barrow, Alaska - When the 4 flushed from the
nest she flew with the tail down & spread, the white on
the sides of its tail conspicuous and went into a brief
distraction display when she landed.
26 June Barrow, Alaska - not much in evidence near Dr.
Pitelka's pannes plot. In the evening Bob Hamilton
and I found 2 nests in the Bavel area behind
the Animal hut, each located along the edge
of a polygon in relatively high dead grass and each
with 2 eggs. The 4s attending have a fluttering flight
when approached and are very nervous when we
get near the nest but both went back on when we
were only about 40 ft away.
27 June Hamilton and I found 4 more nests today, two
in the Bavel area, each with 4 eggs, and 2 in the
Woth area, each with 4 eggs; Nest 1,3+4 are unchanged
and nest 2, which Hamilton found yesterday, has 4 eggs.
We saw 4 birds together on one occasion but believe
them to be nesting pairs which are located well away
from the areas in which they are now feeding. The
display seen on the ground but still short flight songs
to be seen when 4s are disturbed. One strong distraction
display was seen, the bird going off with the tail down
and one wing dragging, when we nearly stood on its
nest.
28 June The bird on Nest 5 flew off giving a strong distraction
display (next page) and activity was near Nest 3 in the
Arka P.H. Seen only single birds near the nests but pairs
