Calidris pusilla
19 June Barrow, Alaska - one was seen flying Ealbych
Beach Ridge in the morning and 3-15 pairs were
seen near the Voth area in the afternoon. The
arrival display was given frequently, consisting
of a rapid beat usually low flight up to 20 ft.
with the motor-boat given constantly. Two birds
(together along the edge of a trough with standing
water) were watched for a couple of minutes as
the smaller fed in the water and the larger stood on
a polygon near by; both gave short (6-10 notes) series
of tr-tr-tr--- notes like the flight song, the
notes of the smaller bird being deeper. They called
antiphonally. After this a third bird, which had
been with a 4th in a similar area flew in giving
the flight display call, landed and went into a
"wing out" display similar in form to C. paudi's
and chased the 1st small bird. All these took flight
but the larger soon landed and the others went into
a prolonged chase involving the aerial display.
