P. DeBenedictis 1965 Calidris pusilla 10 June Baurus, Alaska - two birds were seen near a gravel-tundra area near the hab area; one was 1st seen flying in and when I went over 2nd bird flushed from along a puddle and flew off a short distance. I then located 3rd bird near a large puddle in the gravelled area. One of the birds went into a display flight quite like the flight song of a snipe (capella), but neither bird seemed to be attached to the area as both left after I had disturbed them. 11 June at least 9 birds were present in the area checked yesterday, mostly in pairs a groups of 3, a few singles and the groupings quite stable. Saw the "snipe"= "motorpal" display several times, the birds circling with the wings in a V d. bediab, the primaries open, and accompanied by a pulsatory call; the birds general flop stiffly a glide in a arc while giving this and often when 2 birds are together only one shows the display; the whole thing reminds me very much of a vocal display of the Snipe seen in lots Way at Bridgeport this year. 12 June Only one in the Barrel area. There were between 15+20 birds along the VSTH (W) side of Family Logoon. Still groups of 3-5 birds but many singles and a few pairs. Little display but this likely due to the weather. Bird shows a pronounced tendency to feed in highly disturbed, loose ground or between clumps of grass thereon and pecked almost exclusively. Little display.
