Calidris albus
16 June Barrow Alaska: - Skinned a birds shot near
where I saw the bird yesterday. It had a fully
unmodified skull and had a very prominent
sternal keel in spite of the fact the feather tracts
were well supplied with fat and there was
no body molt.
17 June at least 14 birds were present in the area
between South Salt & Family lagoon, this figure
obtained from a flock of 7 seen flying over + then
flushing a 2nd group of 7 on the ground from the
area over which they flew; they were in various states
of transition from summer to winter plumage
but did not seem to be in much molt. Heard only
the "kit" note and a harsher "kut" from birds
flying about and no displays. Feeding was
similar to the bird seen June 15 and variable
as to location. These are probably migratory
birds and it will be surprised if they stay around.
Largest group seen together was 7.
19 June Saw two birds together on two occasions in
the area where we saw them June 17 but
no evidence that they are territorial. They were
active in feeding and took most prey with short
probing motions: They were not as noisy as
yesterday.
20 June Only 3 observations of single birds in this area
today, but possibly all of different kinds. Only heard
#1 call note "k.t."
