Arenarie interpes
3 June
Pleade River Coal Mine, 1570 25'W, 70°39'N, Alaska.
I saw 17 birds near the village, where they are
now more widespread than before, and still feeding
in disturbed areas. Saw one fight between two
the first
males. The two were chasing each over, then one
landed (or nearly landed) on the snow and the other
affected it, the two birds fleeting on the snow
bank. Then one bird broke free and was chased
by the other, which turned back after 20-30 feet.
The only calls heard were the "chu-it chu-it chu-it"
calls, much subdued.

Turnstones were located only near the village, where
6-7 birds present. One seen - 2 after a 3rd bird -
was seen.

Only two of certainly in camp now. Some chasing
and a little posturing seen. A shambled aggressive
posture characteristic of clilidrines seen in 2 to 3
chases, preceded by a "forward-like" display
very briefly in one instance, before an aerial chase
with a flight. They seem to have gone to actual contact
with a minimum of display, except vocal, in aggressive
situations. They are actively garbage feeding the village,
The only area they are now regularly present.
