Arenaria interpres
17 June Barrow, Alaska - Flare like "chewit chewit
chewit," and on the ground a series of notes
"cut cut cut" after breed or migration. They are
not as social the other shorebirds, being more
spread out over the tundra. Also Saw one
chase a Sandplover feeding nearby in a trough
area.
18 June Two swift seen in the Barrow area, fly about, one
giving the "cut cut cut" call but no marked
display other than a slower than usual wingbeat
19 June There appeared to be more birds in the area between
S and S. Salt hogoon; heard the usual assortment
of calls and saw several feeding in saltus low, wet
areas throwing mud aside and apparently taking,
food from below the surface. Close inspection of
areas where they had been feeding showed that
they were ripping up the snowy cover to the tundra to get
to the food below.
20 June There were more birds present in this above area
than yesterday and some are clearly social. All birds
seen feeding were in wet low situations and feed
in turnstone fashion.
21 June A flock of 8 was seen flying in the W over
S part of S. Salt hogoon and it continued on
our M. Salt hogoon out of sight. Scattered birds on
the west, around yesterday were almost entirely absent;
and heard few vocalizations.
