Pluvialis dominica 9 July Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°24'N, Alaska One egg was nearly spawned up and the others were punctured. The 2 was an and gave a distraction display; the 3 came in and gave alarm calls but no distraction display. Didn't see the other birds, except the 8 briefly on the plot. 11 July Something going on. There is probably 1 more pair towards South creek beyond those by the census plot, the birds cooing in the Eriophorum between the Lost Lake and the ridge. Got much alarm from golden flowers near the 3-egg brook nest and then alarm from the plot near the 5-3 marker. Couldn't tell what was going on. ? a different pair or the same bird moving about to meet me. The 2 nesting on the plot seem to have moved into this Eriophorum area towards between the lakes by the plot, and the nest empty. In the evening this pair still in the area. Didn't look for chicks. A pair we saw near the 4,2 marker, the 3 giving the "to see du lee" call; heard a "fweelee" call from a second bird and saw the 7 sitting. Went to the area and found two chicks, which sat tight enough we could step on claw. They were in wet Eriophorum, where it seems to be taking over from Carey marsh; the moss is saturated but no standing water, and this area about 1/2 Eriophorum. Much Eriophorum.
