Cavia stellata
25 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157025'W, 70029'N, Alaska
Ray caught a beautifully plumaged bird in his fish net
in the Meade River during the day. Its eyes were deep
reddish brown (mahogany) and the bill black, the culmen
pale-yellow brown. The legs and feet are black
externally and internally on the joint, and the internal
surface is blue white, becoming pale blue centrally.
It is a lovely cullis, frozen to be prepared later.
To 3 July. Red throats seen frequently in and along the
River, but less commonly on the lake inland, Lake
Agassiz and the area across from the North shore,
being exceptions. Little calling now, and the
birds are very commonly seen in pairs. Total
#s in the area probably about = Arctic, (but
they are seldom as concentrated as the Arctics
were in late June.
8 July A couple on Lake Agassiz and two figures.
11 July Two on Lake Agassiz. They soon left the
area
