P. DeBenedictis 1965 Pluvialis dominica 22July Barrow, Alaska- one "wee wit wit wet" call and the usual "tu-lee" flight call. 4 seen in VOTH story and 3-4 near the W end (10 posts) of line III A-B. No evidence of breeding birds in this area. 23July A group of 4 in flight near the Brush Ridge and 4-5 feeding in thickly grassy flats on the ridge near USC+6S. Later 21 were seen scattered on the W end of the marsh feeding primarily in sat. areas with fairly dense (55%) grass cover 2-4 inches high, 1 or 2 on the weasel road. 2 were seen on the grassy flat near small pool in drained part of the marsh. All seen were silent and were in mottled breeding plumage; none acted like they were with young. 24July A flock of 18+ just south of line IIIA in rather dry raised polygonized area. The birds were moderately spooky and feed primarily on the grassy polygons rather than in troughs. They were fairly quiet. The two at 600 line appears to have moved down to the creek and 1 or 2 other pairs were seen in this area, all quite noisy, as if they had young out of the nest. None of the chicks were seen by me. 25July Several small (4-5) groups of plovers and one of about 13 seen in area South of Ikravik as well as a few birds that appeared to have young. Two chicks accompanied by a pair were seen in a dryish, grassy area of light center polygons west of Ikravik, well above the wet grassy area. The chicks were quite small.
