Pluvialis dominica
30 June Bayou, Alaska - This species was really common in
Central Marsh forming groups of 15-20
out in the middle
of the marsh; they were silent. They were quite variable
in extent of Vertical black, some having considerable
white on the posterior abdomen. Later I saw a group
of about 15 in the polygonal area N of the ridge and the
group of 10 was back in Micconet Marsh. Most of these
birds appeared to be migratory rather than broods, and
they were fairly jumpy.
1 July Only about 6 birds in the group on Micconet and
a couple more scattered about - only display was the
call involving the "wit" note - heard 2X.
2 July Rather scattered groups were seen scattered
over: The End of Holmes's Marsh and all over
Central Marsh; they were all very quiet and no sign
of the flocks of the last few days were seen.
3 July A group of 10 in Micconet. Hummelton said 23
were present last night.
4 July They were only scattered from Bn Horn's Area to Foot
point and Stine to Meadow Lakes - mostly pairs and
not more than 4 together (in UOTA's lough). They were
rather silent. I counted 39 in the SE end of Central
Marsh and 19 more in the W-centre part of the
marsh, including at least one pair stationed along
the edge of the marsh. They fed in shallowly flooded
quaggy areas, and were rather silent, even when they
flushed; they loosely were associated with Dowitchers.
There did not seem to be many in Micconet Marsh. The
