Pluvialis dominica
Y. DeBenedictis
1965
17 June Barrow, Alaska (cont), from birds in flight.
Saw an aerial chase between 2 black-faced birds
and a few ground chases but no other display
activity.
18 June One seen on the Beach Ridge.
19 June There were more birds in the Both-Bither's area
than last time, and saw 1 aerial displays. The
wind flies west a slowish, stiff, straight out wing beat,
calls: "ku tee" or "kun lee" or "teelee" or "tulee",
the beat about 4 per 3 seconds and the calls
synchronous with the wing beat. The display
is carried out 20-30 feet up and lasts 10-15
seconds. There were at least 2 % and didn't
any black-faced birds together. Bird was hard to
approach.
20 June Saw 3 flight displays as described above.
Heard again a very complicated vocalization -
"Something like "too wee wihwit wit teeloo"
-- -- --
or longer, but have been unable to note the context
in which it is given. Not all birds present
seem to be paired.
21 June Only 3-4 birds in the area where 10+ were seen
yesterday, and no special behavior observed.
22 June Heard the long vocalization and believe
chase was involved but couldn't be sure due to
fog. No flight display.
23 June Birds seen in the afternoon were quiet; all birds.
