16 June Meleale River Coal Club, 157°35'W, 28°29'N, Alaska
A pair, one singing near the South ridge at the S.
end of lake again, sing "pheew wee" and
giving the butterfly flight, and singing from the
far side of the river.
17 June Singing from the far side of the Meleale River,
in the evening giving a considerable part of the song
with much rolling. In lake Agassiz feeding in the
marsh as do Golden Plovers.
18-19 June Singing across the river SSW of lake Agassiz
21 June Singing across the Meade from camp. A pair near the dunes
S of camp on the Oxbow of the Meade.
23 June They, like golden plovers, seem to have moved out
into the marshes, where they feed in typical plover
fashion. Saw 3 together so there must be two
couples SSW of camp. No song and little (only clown)
calling.
25 June Feeding along the squaween dunes in the pools across
the river opposite N-dunes. One attacked a jayago
that flew over from a position on a higher, dryer,
lichen covered bluff.
27 June Found a pair which gave high intensity
distraction displays on a black lichen area
(Corniculana-Ceteria association). Couldn't find
a nest. The birds gave the "pheew-wee" call, the
"pee-nee-wee", and once the rolling notes
followed by the "pheew-wee". The distraction display
is identical with that of golden plovers. Involves a
