Lagopus lagopus
14June Mleade River Coal Mine, 157°25'N, 70°24'W, Alaska
Steve said the nest I found 12 June now has 8 eggs,
and he found a 2nd setting 4 near the census plot.
20June We went to see the nest near the census plot,
The 4 was sitting and allowed approach to 5 feet
without flushing. Not checked. 8's still courting
and some are obviously beginning the black molt
(scopular) now.
21June A 3 still near the mine, and 8's well spaced
along the river, heat territorial system seems to
be breaking down as 8's trespass a lot, and
more "fighting" than before. Still good courtship
flight and calls. Most 8's have black scopular
showings.
23June The nest on the far side of Lake Hyassiz now has 9 eggs
and the 4 continues to sit really as tight as it
4 near the census plot. Two 8's seen during the
biprop. No display.
26June Ray says the nest by the census plot has 8 eggs.
27June 2-3 8's on the flats opposite the river, still chucking
a bit.
28June A 8 came into camp and landed in front of me.
It didn't stay around for me to catch it.
29June Only noted near Lake Agassiz.
30June The nest near the census plot ok. 9 eggs.
The 4 sitting so tight I can touch her. Nest dove
sleek up and hisses when I approach and
charged when I turned back.
