hagopus logopu - 8 9 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°24'N. Alaska See local birds cackling near camp about 8 A.M. A few on the mudra near the village. The 4's are slly and the 4's are quiet but still cackling etc's when I flush them. Most 4's nearly done with molt now but 4's have not advanced much. The 3's some times sing after I flush them. A little cackling by males after 9:30 P.M. One group 3's near the saw plot, one apparently dominant. Not much activity. They often are very close to the river edge in willow clumps. 10 June 3's scattered and the 4's very shy. 3's cackling when I get near. In the evening saw 3's together and heard some cackling after about 10 P.M. Saw 2-3's near south creek. They just finishing the molt. 11 June 3's scattered along south ridges and down in the high spots in the lake basin & thund. Little activity. Owl, one seen. 12 June Found a nest with 2 eggs under a willow. The nest is not lined. The 2 flushed at close range. The eggs are blotched red brown and hard to see. Most of the local Darninger shot by stenwire from the village today, including 2's on my camp plot. 16 June Little in evidence until late evening. One 3's on the mine A-frame. 17 June A 3' on the W side 1. Agassiz opposite the CO's warri gan but wouldn't find the nest, 2-3 near village. A 3' on the far side of the Meade 2 mi. N. of camp.
