P. DeBenedetti 140c Lagopus lagopus - 7 5 June Meacle River Coal Mine, 15°02'9"W, 70°02'5"W, Alotau The local birds were fairly quiet until about 2 AM when most of the Js started cocking. The Js sleep out in fairly exposed areas. The density appears to be about 1 pair/30 acres of birch ground and the birds move into the lower stiff as it becomes exposed. Most males are associated with a J, no group. The J around slump has nearly completed its molt now. But the Js have a long ways to go. 6 June Very quiet today. The Js fairly well along in molt and the Js stationed widely. One singing from top of a building in the village. The hens are getting slug but the males are still very conspicuous. 7 June I saw few birds this afternoon but found two kills in the polygonal area between the village and its makahs. Both were piles of feather on the ground, including retrices, but now very skin. 8 June The Js are not as noisy as before, the Js much slower, as the last 2-3 days. Often get right up to the Js before they flush. The Js then come in and sing, the eye-combs inflamed. Found a kill with skin completely cleaned behind camp and 1-2 kills on the village flats. Not many around, pob. density 1 J/50 acres.
