Lagopus lagopus - 5 29 May Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska as before 30 May Only a few birds noted but they are now very vocal. Mostly lone males were seen with a & and a $ walking the outer tail feathers were seen together. They are now very prone to get up and fly off! when approached, the wings make a very distinctible song as the birds go by. Scattered males were very noisy from about 10:30 to 11:30, but with long bursts between calls. Only one $ seen. 31 May. Birds are well scattered out and were quiet most of the mid day through noisy during the earlier morning. 1 June. The only ones seen were quiet, huddled close to the ground. mostly males in evidence past a few females are in the area. A kill, fresh, found about 3 PM in back of camp was being eaten by Glaciarous gulls. There were feathers on the ground about 15 feet from the position of the corpse and the body was still warm and moist, but the head wet and cold. 2 June A few lone males seen scattered along the cliff side of camp, No forks and just 3 broods at one place near the village, little vocalization Saw one male go through the courtship flight and call. When I jumped a $ with two $s, the $ flew off first, being chased by one of the $'s; the other $ stayed a while, then flew in the
