27 May Meade River Coal Mine. 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
in the flats N of the Nativo village. All seem
to be feeding in the open spots where Dryas
1vs. are plentiful. The males are now a little
vocal when they flush, which has not been
the case always, and some keep the eye
combs conspicuously inflated. About 1/4 of the
males have conspicuous deck feathers coming out
on the back now, but the 1s to 4s seem to
have changed much. They are still fairly
slip. In the evening a group of 24-48
and of 634-57 seen near camp, SW along
the Meadee. Generally only in two birds of
a group as least as them are vocal, and
when one bird flushes, the whole group goes.
They prefer to seem if they can.
28 May Birds seen today were predominantly 1s (about 3:1)
The low area N of the village was being utilized
by this species wherever there were low willows
4-6" high intermixed with grass in low centered
Polygonal areas; there was no Dryas here
and I believe birds were taking willow buds.
Some of the 1s are a little vocal (but there is
not much obvious courtship).
29 May. The flocks seem to have almost completely split
up and 1s are very little evidence. Much
calling by males in the AH and from 8 to 10+
P.M. Birds localized in the Sandy-Dryas area.
