DeBeneditte 1965 Gavia stellata 13June Barrow, Alaska - seen flying over its Barrel area W of AKL, bobbling around oil flow. 28June A loon was heard flying over the VOTH Creek area and appeared to be a Yellow bill; a loon shortly after circled the area, making the same call, the usual cackle, and landed on VOTH Creek; it proved to be this species. 29June A wild sounding call from the Meadow Lakes area was attributed to this species by Dr. P. Kelha. 7 July Two lone birds seen in flight over Family hayorn 11July At least 3 seen in the Ikoavik region, including a pair in a small lake but no nest could be found. They were silent and fairly shy. 12 July This appeared to be the common loon out on the creek and 4 or 5 were seen diving at rather close distance from shore. They stayed out in fairly open patches of water. 15July One yelling from the Meadow Lake area in the evening. 16July one flying to east (smith) with 3 Yellow Bills over Elson hayorn. 24July One seen flying north over Voth creek, call a low, now ---- repeatedly. When I got to Family hayorn it circled and changed to the rough call and landed; a 2nd bird on the log saw began cackling when the 1st changed to the rough call. 25July Several seen in the area south of Ikoavik, including two on a relatively small pool, where no nest found. They were less common than Arctics (by about 2:1).
