Gavia stellata
13June Barrow, Alaska - seen flying over its
Barrel area W of AKL, bobbling around oil
flow.
28June A loon was heard flying over the VOTH Creek area and
appeared to be a Yellow bill; a loon shortly after circled
the area, making the same call, the usual cackle, and
landed on VOTH Creek; it proved to be this species.
29June A wild sounding call from the Meadow Lakes
area was attributed to this species by Dr. P. Kelha.
7 July Two lone birds seen in flight over Family hayorn
11July At least 3 seen in the Ikoavik region, including
a pair in a small lake but no nest could be found.
They were silent and fairly shy.
12 July This appeared to be the common loon out on the creek
and 4 or 5 were seen diving at rather close distance
from shore. They stayed out in fairly open patches
of water.
15July One yelling from the Meadow Lake area in the evening.
16July one flying to east (smith) with 3 Yellow Bills
over Elson hayorn.
24July One seen flying north over Voth creek, call a low,
now ---- repeatedly. When I got to Family
hayorn it circled and changed to the
rough call and landed; a 2nd bird on the log saw
began cackling when the 1st changed to the rough call.
25July Several seen in the area south of Ikoavik, including two on
a relatively small pool, where no nest found. They were less
common than Arctics (by about 2:1).
