Pearson 1983 104 Chelomys megalocephala Dec 1 Valle Hermosa, 45 km ENE Volcan Paterna, probably 3000 m. In this habitat of scattered low brushes, mostly spiny (Adesmia, Berberis, chiquirapa, another Adesmia - like brush with "needles" and yellow logune flower, and spiny cession grass) growing on light soil containing many flat stones (can't dig with shovel), burrows and signs of operations snowdrifts nearby, are very abundant. No carnivorous droppings, and no tunnels by cruzol, forticar, caught Chelomys in all habitats, all white-tailed field rat 7131. Sign was also abundant much higher, maybe 3400 m in sparse alteleous type vegetation. We preserved all specimens except 2 white-tailed juveniles that weighed about 18 g. each. Our live one caught in a cage trap we just took with me in a cage with carrot [crossed out], crackers, cheese, and mouse carcass. It died, probably of thirst, having eaten some cheese, some mouse, but no carrot or cracker. They squeal when molested. Its associates were Abdera concolor, Aulacorys microfusa, and lots of Abdera longipalis x juveniles, breeding males, and pregnant lactating females in the population.
