Very little fresh digging, many open holes, closely grazed, and lots of Rattlebox droppings. One tree seemed out of a short open hole with Rattlebox droppings around it; The loudest call in a bird-like chitter. Two or more will chitter back forth to each other. There is also a soft whimper. No hard tree sounds. The whole impression is one of a colony of ground squirrels.
