Dec. 10 Bariloche. Visited Adam Hajduk, the archaeo- logist. He says he first visited Bariloche in 1960 and that there were islands of Juncus floating on the lake at the time. People have told him that the "ash" layer about 1 inch thick and 2" below the surface is that layer. He says he has found 11,000-yr-old deposits with horse, mylodon, llama, + guanaco. Dec. 11 Bariloche. Drove out past the airport on the road to Estancia El Condor and a little beyond, looking for snout with cortadera clumps (pampa grass). None. Found two/three with green turf and holes with Rattusnor droppings. Dec. 12 Drizzle in AM. Drove out to the wire scrub south of town and scouted area for tomorrow's trafficking excursion with Felipe Volverde of the University of Concepcion. In some places dena and bamboo come down on the east slope of Cero Otto and meet the wire scrub. Then drove to Estancia Tabuel Model to look for owl pellets in the empty quarter. Stopped at a cliff on the north side of the road to Villa angostura, 6 km west of the turnoff from the main N-S road to Confluencia. This cliff plots 6 km NW of Volcan Huapi (the exit of the lake).
