Beaver 1978 May 22 Bariloche May 23 Drove to Estancia Pelcaniyes to look for poto. Huge unoccupied main house with good attic. No sign of potos. Chas. me Williams, the administrator, said he didn't know of any potos thereabouts. He also said 10-15% of all lambs born in Patagonia are killed by potos. Says both grey & red potos are present, no much. Saw maybe 50 caracaras feeding in the mud of the almost-dry lake at Estacion Perto Moreno, zorathing in the mud with six foot. after lunch at Pelcaniyes drove to the cliffs to the east to look for potos with Dec. Fuchs. It was almost the same place we had looked 1 1/2 yrs ago. His kids had heard squeaking in a hole, and when they poured water into the hole, potos came out a crack lower down. We found none. Temperatures at Pelcaniyes got as low as - 24 C; altitude is 1,400m. Altitude of Jugo Moral throfi is 754m. May 24 In the evening drove to Hotel Jogo Moreno. No potos in garage at 7 p.m., nor at 11:30 p.m., 2:30 a.m., 5:30 a.m., nor 8:15 a.m. Evening cold and raw but close freezing at not windy. Tent at dawn 38o. Heard two-trees in the night: 3 o'clock tue-tue-tues, pause, repeat. The Senora Claudia said many potos emerged from under the slab and of her house in January.
