Tues.
Mar. 19.
[illegible] east of Matarain, 600 ft., Dept. avequiba, Peru
after 2 days in Tacna getting the truck licensed etc,
finally left about 10:30 A.M. Lots of Zootrichia capensis
screeching about the city, such as Hotel Tacna and the
Palace along Arequipa Bolognesi. Neither saw nor heard
a single English Sparrow. The Zootrichias seem to have
moved north that used to screege along Bolognesi.
Drove north to Moquegua. The scrubby plain
north of Tacna that was green last year in March
is all dried up, but lots of mice there. Arrived
Moquegua about 12:45. Post office closed, not open until
3 p.m., so we left for Mollendo. Fairly good, almost
dried-up vegetation coming down into Matarain.
Lots of mouse and/or lizard trails at one place where
we stopped. The zone between Matarain and
Mollendo, recommended by Holt-Hugbee, is dry,
almost as "dust" as Novo Dava in
1973 March. Not enough rocks & shelter for mice,
howerver, so we drove inland a couple of miles
and camped at 5:30 p.m., clear windy. I put out
about 38 small Sherman's baited with rolled oats.
Center put out 15 large Shermans. Soil powdery dry, a
chalk quarry nearby. A few small butter + ivy plants in bloom,
a few clusters of Cordoloba costei looking sad.
The weather in Tacna was overcast all three
nights but cleared each morning,
March 20
2 Phyllotis darwini in my traps, are often jerudts.
None in center. No Zootrichias, heard burrowing owls
and I think seed scrips. No ants.
