Dec.25 Nothing in anybody's traps. All has seen more tinamous.
also 2? families of so half-dozen small owls. Lots of bats
flying in evening, but we know of no water for owls. Still
no evidence of people other than troffis on the roads.
At 6pm autor I set about 150 live traps in scrub &
palms about 12 kms SW Chumbalo, The palms seem to be
the center of action, with droppings and numerous digging under
them. Saw capeton tinamous. Temp: in chumbalo at 5:30
was 42o.
Dec.26 Walking in traps, but one group in acute strips near
camps. Drove to Audalpa for lunch with Marce and
Beryl Vallen-Viselemieu, then camped at the Cuesta
de Zapata between Belen and Tenogardo, 1875m. Carol
+ autor put out about 50 traps,
Dec.27 Traps caught 4 mice (2 braompi + 2 rh). Vegetation: grass
bushes and pink granite. Drove through Tirogasta + Francelo, thence
toward Paso de San Francisco. Camped at 13,300ft about 122km
NW Tirogasta, a pampa with stream, quetal llanos. Camped in
unoccupied hut. Autor put out about 25 large Shermana.
Dec.28 Night clear, barely freezing. 4 Phyllos dormice and 1 abeodon
aridenius? in autor's traps. Left early and drove to Cofijo,
arriving about 5pm. From Francelo to Pinguio, (a couple of km
in a salty river bottom an hour or so east of Cofijo),
a distance of 400km +, we saw no vehicle and only
one person - a man driving a couple of loaded burros. We recognized
