July 2.
Fina all day trying to get new owner's card. Left without it at about 3:30 pm after meeting at the Noya's where Roy Zarry is staying. Sofia Noya is a good friend of Hurtado's second in command.
Drove south to Jurin, then north to Pochacama.
Camped in completely sterile hills above a valley with cotton, alfalfa, etc. We are at the upper edge of irrigation, with some fields of spine grass and alfalfa, tomatoes, etc., with a few trees [illegible] and hordes along irrigation ditches. A few bunches and bushes away from irrigation, but most of it desert bare except for a "scum" of blackened dry plants looking like dried algae on a beach.
Set 26 Sherman specials and 2 controls along corral walls etc. In almost total desert; at 5 p.m., calm, overcast. We are about 2 km NE Pochacama, about 500 ft elevation. Andy saw [illegible] owl.
July 3
Visit from police in middle of night. My traps hold 1 Phyllotis. Jurin had 2 Mus and Andy a Mus and a Phyllotis. My Phyllotis was along a corral wall, completely bare. Morning partly cloudy, partly clear. Left noon for more registration in Fina. Still no owner's card for trucks. Slept in truck all day.
July 4
Lunched with Dr. Julio Gonzalez-Vergolm in AM. He reported that Dr. Wooder is in Fina (and Kofelberz still here). Talked with Wooder on phone and made date for tomorrow. Returned to Pochacama in afternoon and stayed overnight.
