nice. Arrived Arequipa 6pm. I am impressed at the
almost total lack of vegetation between Canara and
Arequipa. Bare - bare even up to 7,000ft., and the new
road passes almost no caeti (unlike my photos
from a previous trip). Saw no place where I
would have expected guavacoa, as collected in 1948
(or was it 1953?). Checked into Pension Centenario.
July 12
all day in Arequipa
July 13 (sund)
Left Arequipa about 10am and wound up the hill to the east.
Stopped in the bushy zone at 10,600ft., about 12 miles east.
There Baccharis, mugygrifinae and at least 8 other
kinds of bushes, a few up to 10 feet tall, but
mostly lower height. In the bottom of a washover
caƱon they are especially thick & tall. Here
catacua gigas is very abundant. Can see 5 or
20 at a time, with lots of chasing, feeding,
calling etc. Two frequently "squabble" and chase
each other 100 - 200 feet into the air. They
are feeding on a bush with large orange flowers,
compound leaves with tendrils at the end
of the leaves. Not a dryone, the rusty red
Seriphidium is here also. Lots of flies.
Flies, have seen a dozen or more including
a flock of Perishete perching on a stone
wall beside the road.
Put out 30 Sherman (Oats) and 16 MS about
5pm through the bushy marshland along
brushing retaining walls. Evening clear & calm.
