P. PEARSON 1951 Heard Tinamou crowing, saw flickers. Left about 11 with truck from Tintupson. Saw Tinamou among rocks at 14,300 but missed. Arrived Santa Rosa at noon, then across some rather nice sage desert to the Valley of the Winds between Santa Rosa & Mogering (Rio Santa Rosa, 13,300ft). Put out 60 museum speicials among tewa (Lepistophyllus), Festuca, and rocks - all rather sandy. The re-appearance of what looks like Festuca orthophylla here is interesting. Also set 8 other traps for tweas among the sage & festuca on the flats along the river. One of these was sprung & empty before dark. Dec.16 (Sunday) In my traps only one Abodon andinum? along a sandy dry wash. Ante got 1 Bolonay, 1 Eligenodontus, and 1 Ambesongs? Also 1 Cteevong's spinimus by a hind foot. Later in the morning caught another Cteevong's by the hind foot. Night clear, minimum 20°. At 5:30am - 25°; 6:45-38°, 42%. 8:00-42°, 28%; 9:00-48°, 28%; 11:30-15°, 28%; 2pm-16°, 22%. Hot in sun, cool in shade, even cold. Left about 2 pm and drove to Pampas Oncullerto where we shot 4 guinea pigs and made camp. Heard one two bumble but have seen none. Nice clear sunset on the rich hills. Dec.17 Temp at arrival -4°C. Clear all day except for clouds in late afternoon. Photos + hunted twees + guinea pigs in morning. Then drove a few miles to the gorge of the Rio Hunqure and camped along the river. Skinned Twees and fried (3 9-inch and 1 12-inch). The canyon more beautiful than ever at sunset.
